TITLE: Fabricators, Canvas and Net Products
DEFINITION: Lay out and assemble canvas and net goods, such as trawl nets and sails. Fabricate and install surface coverings.
TASKS:
1. Lays out drawing on floor and marks outline on material.
2. Secures rope or cable to finished sail, and wraps and sews parts of rope or cable to prevent chafing.
3. Draws diagram and lays out patterns for net parts on paper, using rule and pencil or marking crayon.
4. Splices, inserts, and hems rope into edges of sail to relieve strain.
5. Hangs net on metering lines or holds seams to align seams, and threads twine through meshes and ties knots to secure seam.
6. Attaches prefabricated bag to truncated end of net.
7. Fastens fabric parts to structure, using cement, needle and thread, or metal strips and screws.
8. Installs grommets, metal fittings, and fasteners, using machine.
9. Marks grommet holes on material, punches holes, and sews galvanized iron ring to hole.
10. Sews material according to markings, using power sewing machine.
11. Sketches design of canvas item, measures boat, and makes pattern from measurements.
12. Installs and adjusts completed sail on ship, and examines sail for conformance to specifications.
13. Fabricates patterns and templates.
14. Cuts material or patterns with shears or power cutter.
15. Reinforces material with cloth tape.
16. Cuts, bends, and joins aluminum framework, attaches sail material, and assembles and installs framework on boat.
17. Applies dope to fabric to color, prime, tighten, strengthen, and preserve, using brush or spray gun.
18. Makes awning frames.
19. Sprays covering with water to smooth surface.
