TITLE: Library Assistants and Bookmobile Drivers
DEFINITION: Library Assistants: Compile records; sort and shelve books; issue and receive library materials, such as pictures, cards, slides, phonograph records, and microfilm; and handle tape decks. Locate library materials for loan and replace material in shelving area (stacks) or files according to identification number and title. Register patrons to permit them to borrow books, periodicals, and other library materials. Bookmobile Drivers: Operate a bookmobile or light truck that pulls a book trailer to specific locations on a predetermined schedule and assist with providing services in mobile library.
TASKS:
1. Issues borrower's identification card according to established procedures.
2. Drives bookmobile to specified locations following library services schedule and to garage for preventive maintenance and repairs.
3. Issues books to patrons and records or scans information on borrower's card.
4. Sorts books, publications, and other items according to procedure and returns them to shelves, files, or other designated storage area.
5. Locates library materials for patrons, such as books, periodicals, tape cassettes, Braille volumes, and pictures.
6. Classifies and catalogs items according to contents and purpose.
7. Maintains records of items received, stored, issued, and returned and files catalog cards according to system used.
8. Answers routine inquiries and refers patrons who need professional assistance to librarian.
9. Delivers and retrieves items to and from departments by hand or push cart.
10. Prepares, stores, and retrieves classification and catalog information, lecture notes, or other documents related to document stored, using computer.
11. Reviews records, such as microfilm and issue cards, to determine title of overdue materials and to identify borrower.
12. Inspects returned books for damage, verifies due-date, and computes and receives overdue fines.
13. Selects substitute titles, following criteria, such as age, education, and interest when requested materials are unavailable.
14. Places books in mailing container, affixes address label, and secures container with straps for mailing to blind library patrons.
15. Operates and maintains audio-visual equipment and explains use of reference equipment to patrons.
16. Prepares address labels for books to be mailed, overdue notices, and duty schedules, using computer or typewriter.
17. Repairs books, using mending tape and paste and brush, and places plastic covers on new books.
